Let's paint a picture. Your little one is always restless, seemingly deaf to their name being called and can't seem to stay focused on a task. Do they have difficulty sitting at the table for dinner? Are they bouncing off the wall with seemingly boundless energy? Maybe their grades at school don't reflect their ability? Are they having trouble falling asleep?
Everyone has sensory issues. Some are great and some are minor, but we all have them. For example, I don't like repetitive sounds. It drives me insane. I am aware of the irritation and can change my setting to cope with it. Think about something that sends your brain or body into overdrive. Now think of a small child not understanding what is irritating their little body in the same situation.
Welcome to the age where children are over stimulated, over scheduled and overwhelmed. How can their little bodies and brains handle all that is thrown at them in their home and school environment? They can't communicate it because they are not equipped with the language or understanding to let their big people know what is going on.
We see more and more children coming through the school system struggling to regulate their little bodies but there is hope. Modern day occupational therapy tools are easily accessible to families and schools now through online portals such as Amazon and other sensory suppliers. We've compiled a list of tools that may work for you or your little person. We use a variety of these tools in class for the children to access at any time that they feel the need to.
If you have space at home, we recommend collecting all their toys that help them play calmly and place them in a basket for their "go to" sensory sanctuary and calming space. You don't have so spend a fortune either. Keep an eye out for items at second hand stores, online garage sales or discount stores.
🌈 Include toys that don't disrupt others. For example; musical instruments may be best for the bedroom and not the living room.
🌈 The Calming Space is a safe space and not to be used as a tool for discipline.
🌈 Observe your child. Where do they go as soon as they get home? What seems to upset them most? When does their overload seem to happen? Are they full of processed food and sugars? Have they had regular rest and sufficient water throughout the day?

🌈 Be invested. Provide full attention. Your child will demand it either through good behavior or misbehavior. Either way, they will get your attention. Fun Parenting is to provide that attention before it's demanded and because you want to spend time actively engaged with your child.
🌈 Trust your instinct. If you have a worrying feeling about your child, trust your instinct and request a child development assessment from your Child's Physician. Early Detection gives you and your child more time to get help and formulate a plan for your child, their school and your home.
